BUTEKOM Deputy General Manager Prof. Dr. Mehmet Karahan told the latest developments about Sustainability in the Textile İndustry.
Sustainability in production is a multi-segment issue.
It is an issue that has many parameters such as raw material, process optimization, efficient use of human resources, and recycling. When it comes to the textile industry, unfortunately, the textile industry is among the industries that pollute the world the most.
Therefore, each textile product şs required to be designed by creating the environmental impact of the production phase, the usage phase and the disposal methods to be followed after the end of its life.
Let me give you some examples. For example, did you know that 1 kg of cotton consumes 20 tons of water from the field to the moment of use?
This means that, for example, I should say that the t-shirt you wear needs almost 2700 Lt. of water for you to wear it on you.
Environmental sustainability has become increasingly important in the textile industry depending on the negative impacts of textiles on the environment.
This is definitely one of the most important issues that we need to emphasise.
Many brands carry out this as a mission to improve their sustainability references in this regard.
On the other hand, sustainability in the fashion industry is going to different points. Today, while some major supplier companies are trying to increase their own sustainability, they are also encouraging consumers to keep their clothes away from the trash. In other words, they are encouraging them to use more or to recycle them.
For example, the H&M store in Stockholm has started to put products, which have been newly created from old clothes collected from customers, broken into pieces and turned into clothes, on its shelves.
Because of the strategies followed by countries and global brands, sustainable textiles are constantly developing and new criteria are being formed. In addition, the formation of a consumer group, whose consumption habits and fashion understanding are changing and who are encouraged to change. is increasing every passing day?
For this reason, issues such as producing raw materials that are less harmful to the environment, researching the possibilities of reusing clothes, optimizing processes and emitting less chemical waste into the environment are required to be on the agenda more in the textile industry.
Therefore, I would like to state that BUTEKOM will provide such support to the textile industry in these sustainable production concepts implemented by global brands.
Thanks.
